What is Kavach anti-collision system?. How this indigenous tech can prevent train accidents. (200 Words, 15)
The Kavach protection system has been under development since 2012 under the name of Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). The technology is necessary keeping in mind the safety of people travelling in Indian railway. The major aim is to reduce human errors.Technology used
RFID
The system communicates using ultra Radio Frequency Identification that can control brakes of trains and also alert the loco pilots.
SPAD
It passes a trigger known as Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD), when the loco pilot skips a signal.
Role in reducing accidental errors
Signal jump warning
The system will warn the loco driver if the signal is jumped. This is particularly helpful in areas where signals are not clearly visible due to fog.
Automatic braking
In case of jumping signals by loco driver, the system will automatically apply brakes and reduce speed for preventing accidents.
Locomotive collision prevention
The device is placed at the front of locomotive in order to prevent head to head collision between two trains.
Automatic horn
When a train passes through a crossing, the system will enable automatic horn to warn people near the crossing.
Benefits associated
Highest safety standards
The Kavach system follows the highest level of safety and reliability standard called Safety Integrity Level 4. The chances of accidents are 1 in 10,000 years.
Low cost
It is the world’s cheapest Automatic Train Protection System, with its cost being a fourth of the cost of existing European systems.
